While my daughter is galavanting around Brazil, to such remote and exotic spots as Jericoacoara Beach in Ceara, to experience and photograph, I have been living vicariously through her by taking in a bit of Brazilian dance at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
The Grupo Corpo held their last performance Monday evening to an almost filled theater who clearly loved their "idiosyncratic style." Their name means "Body Group" which one might not comprehend until you see their vision of dance for yourself. I would call it "organic" -- as the dancers move in unison, yet apart from one another, sometimes resembling frogs on lilly pads, crabs in the sea, or grasshoppers in a field. One reviewer had described their movements as unique -- "an enticing combination of balletic lightness and speed, loose, jelly-like arms and shoulders, rhythmic hips, a combination of sharp precision and breezy relaxation."
One thing that was clear -- it was Brazilian. In an interview with Rodrigo Pederneiras, one of the family leaders of the group, for www.straight.com, he explained that they had set out to "create a kind of dance that could be the true face of Brazil, the way of being of the Brazilian people," but that they had "created a way of moving and dancing that's special to Grupo Corpo." He and his brother, Paulo, with their sister, Miriam, founded the company in 1975 with little capital, but a big concept.

Note: Should you attend a performance of any kind at Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, make note that only the seats worth having are centered, no matter how high, but avoid the sides like the plague!
By the time you read this, I'll be 'catching z's' on a flight to Tennessee to visit family and 'chow down' on turkey, just like the rest of you Americans. I can already taste the cranberry sauce, moist stuffing and pumpkin pie. Hopefully the colorful fall leaves on the Maple trees in the Smoky Mountains will not have all dropped off and the local shopping mall will be ripe with bargains. The temperature is so unseasonably warm that the suitcase of turtlenecks got repacked last night for cooler clothing.
Saturday I head to New Orleans with my mother in tow for a whole different kind of 'pig out' -- fried everything and Gulf seafood, if it's edible by now. The weather is even warmer, so there will be more clothing to shed and I hope, sunshine to be had. You'll be hearing all about it next Monday from the city they call "The Big Easy" -- my home town.
Meanwhile, Paris is will still be Paris, except it would not be surprising if another new boutique opens on my street in my absence. I simply can't keep up with how the "quartier" is changing before my very eyes.
Until then, or "a la prochaine"...
A la prochaine...
