A pompadoured, but pretty young woman with a bit of a sneer and a point-and-shoot camera in her teeth is the 'poster child' for this year's "Salon de la Photo" trade fair on through today at the Porte de Versailles. Ignore the bad advertising and take advantage of industry's biggest and best hardware manufacturers who have photographic equipment of every kind on display and for sale.
Ladies, there is only about one woman for every ten men at the show, so if photography is not your 'thing' but photographers are, best strap a camera around your neck so you won't look out of place and head down to the show! There's lots to see and do and learn about photography, too, to stock up on great photography how-to books and books of well-known photographers' works.
In addition, you shouldn't miss the exhibition of Willy Rizzo's Retrospective -- the first devoted to the photographer with 100 photos reflecting 60 years of his work. You will not want to leave without a book of the images as a souvenir (10€).
If you must miss this year's Salon, plan for next year by visiting the site at lesalondelaphoto.com.
This is Mois de la Photo -- a bi-annual event which takes place every even-numbered year in November where photography is celebrated from the perspective of those who create the photos to those who enjoy the art of photography.
"The picture is changing. The means of production, reproduction and distribution have changed even since the last festival of the editorial was written two years ago." This is what the promotional material states, and oh how true that is.
The organizers have officially selected over 100 exhibitions in Paris, but there are many more to take advantage of if you keep your eyes open. With the guide book, you can see them all by following each of their suggested "parcours" (routes). You can either pick one up at any one of the participating galleries or download the pdf file here: www.moisdelaphoto-off.org/
While you're at it, don't miss the exhibition of the works of André Kertész at the Jeu de Paume on through February 6, 2011. The retrospective offers a rare chance to see a large collection of Kertész’s original prints, plus many published images you are sure to recognize. Visit www.jeudepaume.org for more information.
And if you haven't had enough photography for one month, plan on attending Paris Photo 2010 the annual photography fair at the Carrousel du Louvre from November 18th to the 21st, with "one hundred international galleries and publishers presenting a panorama of the finest examples of photographic expression from the 19th century to the present day." This year, the event spotlights the Central European scene, revealing new talents through awards, competitions and offering a program of events and encounters. This is the 14th edition of the fair, and in conjunction with Mois de la Photo, turns the City of Light into the Photography Capital of the World.
It's a feast for one's eyes.
A la prochaine...
