Dear Parler Paris Reader,

Eric Tolbert caught the "pompiers" (firemen) taking the easy way out of decorating(!), while the "rest of us would be hanging out from the window trying to string the lights."

Growing up in New Orleans, we were accustomed to rather elaborate Christmas lights and decorations, considering the city is overwhelmingly Catholic and prone to partying. Our own household saw only the lights from the Chanukah candles, but we took a ritual driving tour of the decorations around the city every year.

Paris, the City of Light, is also the city of holiday illumination and makes a point to encourage the communities to decorate as much as possible to contribute to the holiday spirit. This year, 125 streets, "Places" and avenues will illuminate 200 kilometers in the city.

Two new sectors have been added: the upper part of rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis and Place de l'Italie. Along the Grands Boulevards, passing by Place de l'Opéra, the Tuileries, Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Elysées, passers-by may enjoy taking in various "animations," the "Grande Roue" (Ferris wheel)* and the "Village de Noël des Champse-Elysées. Be sure to also check out the Village des Ternes, rue Vieille du Temple, the Place des Abbesses, avenue de Saint-Ouen, Boulevard Saint-Germain, Rue de Rennes, rue de la Convention, the streets of Lecourbe, Cambronne and Belleville, place du Jourdain, rue de Richelieu, rue des Saints-Pères, rue de Grenelle and Place Vendôme...all dressed in lights.

That ought to keep you busy.

If that's not enough, see the Christmas lights of Bercy Village -- "Constellation," -- the Cour Saint-Emilion, adorned with superimposed structures and bright, inspired creations of the artist Miró, offering a magical night sky dotted with planets. Or visit the Forum des Halles decked for the holiday season in pop art colors: hot pink, electric blue, fluorescent green and orange along with a Christmas tree six meters high in rainbow colors.

So, get out your sunglasses, as you might just need them to take in all the bright lights. For more information about Paris the City of Illumination or all the other activities, visit the Paris.fr and parisillumineparis.fr
